Developed to optimise multi-axis, five-axis machining and the interpolation of free form surfaces, the Reiden BFR 2 range of three universal head machining centres have been constructed to combine heavy duty roughing as well as very accurate finish machining cycles of components weighting up to 7.5 tonnes.
Each of the Reiden BFR 2 series of machines have identical 1,200 mm Y and 1,500 Z-axis travels but with X-axis bed lengths available in 2,000 mm, 3,000 mm and 4,000 mm. These capacities designate the variants of BFR 22, BFR 23 and BFR 24 respectively.
Due to the type of components the machine range is likely to produce, and the need to optimise production cycles 2D CNC Machinery of Rushden, Northants is able to supply a choice from three direct mounted spindles. These range from a heavy duty 45 kW, 5,000 revs/min unit delivering 1,576 Nm of torque and either 6,000 or 7,000 revs/min units powered by 42 kW drive but still able to deliver a torque of 1,135 Nm and a high speed 15,000 revs/min unit with 310Nm of torque. Spindle taper is ISO 50 as standard with an optional HSK 100 also available.
There are also three types of table that can be specified with a 1,000 mm square as standard. CNC rotary units are available between 1,000 and 1,700 mm diameter and combination single plane and integrated rotary table versions of 1,000 mm, 1,250 mm or 1,600 mm diameter. The maximum rotary diameter is 1,800 mm as standard or 2,100 mm as an option. The maximum table loading on the BFR 24 is 11 tonnes.
The machine base and column of the Reiden BFR 2 machine range is constructed from heavy duty cast iron with the various chambers in the corners of the column being strategically filled with polymer concrete to optimise mechanical and thermal stability. This level of stability is further enhanced with the positioning and construction of the saddle/column beam that carries the automatic ±180 deg B-axis swivel head. Electro-hydraulic compensation is employed to minimise any possible deflection of the Y-axis beam which is able to maintain a maximum deviation of ±0.010 mm over a distance of 1,200 mm.
Under Heidenhain iTNC 530 or Siemens 840 control, the tool magazine is positioned for direct change via 2-axis movement control. There are 64 positions as standard but options up to 240 pockets can be specified for tools up to 250 mm diameter by 600 mm in length.
Due to the type of work being machined, the control panel position at the front of the machine can be moved and tilted along a linear rail and there is an option to install a second integrated control at the side of the machine. Wide opening double doors make access easy with a crane. The gap on the smallest BFR 22 is 2.1 metres which increases to 4.1 metres on the largest BFR 24. A separate sliding door gives good additional access to the rear working area of the machine.
A two-pallet system is available with either 1,400 mm by 1,200 mm or 1,700 mm by 1,200 mm and each pallet is able to support loads up to four tonnes. Pallets are positioned using 4 zero-point clamping to achieve a repeatability of ±0.01 mm. A linear storage system is also available.
