Speed Increaser for VMCs...
If you're machining centre is limited on speed and the option of buying a new machine for a specific machining requirement is out of the question then a speed increaser should be considered. A speed increaser can be fitted to most machining centre spindles and will essentially double or triple spindle speeds.
In simple terms the mechanism is a series of gears and pinions that take the existing spindle speed and transform it to a higher output, simple and effective. The only drawbacks are power and stability. You cannot expect to perform heavy duty machining with this solution, high speed alluminium and plastic removal with small depths of cut are achievable. Hogging steel is not.
Another restriction is you do shrink your Z axis movement as the speed increaser will often sit under the spindle nose.
In general the increaser is operated by an M code in the control within the program. You can also store the speed increaser in the tool carousel so you can pick it up in cycle, this helps save time and operator intervention.
In all speed increasers can help you get out of a tight spot, add some speed to machining as and when needed but should never be mistaken for the ultimate in high speed machining solution.
A speed increaser will cost between 2 and 5k depending on the make/model and build.
