A new CNC lathe in your workshop can provide the ideal opportunity to improve throughput and make more money from your capacity. Most machine shops in the UK have turning capacity. Often turning is not quite as popular a milling, when it comes machining however it is certainly the 2nd place machining service.
New Mori Seiki CNC Lathes can be purchased with the following equipment
You can buy a conventional chuck, either 3 or 4 jaw for a New Mori Seiki CNC Lathe. This can be fitted to the machine an operated either pneumatically or hydraulically depending on which suits. Or if you're looking for a more surround clamping solution you can opt for a collet chuck system.
A collet chuck system on a new Mori Seiki CNC lathe will prepare the machine for a more production orientated environment. A collet system is often used in conjunction with a bar feed or a bar puller. If you machine batches of parts then a collet system is more likely to be the preferred workholding solution. Collet chucks available for New Mori Seiki CNC lathes include a CDC 52 or a crawford system, collets can be changed quickly if the bar diameter changes.
Toolholders on a new Mori Seiki CNC lathe are either BMT or VDI, this depends on the option chosen when you purchase the machine.
The VDI toolholders can be purchased from hundreds of outlets in the UK, tool suppliers such as PCM or WNT are a popular well costed option. With BMT toolholders you can also find sources dotted up and down the land, so whichever toolholder solution you choose should be easy to satisfy, equally if you buy a new Mori Seiki CNC lathe from a dealer you could negotiate a suite of toolholders to come with the machine.

Toolsetting arm When turning on a new Mori Seiki CNC lathe you need to set your tools, you can either do this manually or automatically if you have a toolsetting arm on the machine. This is operated by a cycle within the control and will feedback results to the control system and alter the offsets automatically, this saves time, money and tool wear.
Programmable tailstock During a turning cycle you may need to support your turned part at both ends to ensure stability. One end will be your chuck/collet chuck, the other end will be a tailstock. This tailstock can either be moved in cycle manually by opening the machine door an physically positioning the tailstock or it can be moved automatically within cycle. A fully programmable tailstock moves in cycle and is programmed to move in and out as and when needed, again saving time, money and operator intervention.
Driven Tools When turning on a new Mori Seiki CNC lathe you may need to drill/tap of mill flats on your turned part. Instead of removing the component from the machine and re-setting on a machining centre/milling machine you can use a third axis on the new CNC lathe to perform this function. Driven tools and C axis will produce milling/drilling/tapping and chamfering functions. Without question an option that improves throughput, improves accuracy and reduces cycle times.
The control on a new Mori Seiki CNC lathe is also very important, always check with the manufacturer what type of control systems are available, as most offer Fanuc, Siemens or Heidenhain. In addition to this some manufacturers have their own control systems that over time have been developed to provide their users with an easy method of programming.
It's always worth asking for a demonstration on a new CNC lathe and the control system. You can learn alot from this and a bit like a car, some new CNC lathes will suit and some will not. Most dealers and sellers will be happy to do this as long as their is a new CNC lathe available to demo.
